How to make a good membership program?
A good membership program starts with one question: why would someone want to be a member? If you can't answer that clearly, the rest doesn't matter.
Here's how to build one that people actually want to join and stay in.
Start with your value proposition
What do members get that non-members don't? This needs to be specific and tangible. "Access to a community of professionals" is vague. "Monthly roundtable with industry leaders, a job board exclusive to members, and discounted CPD courses" is something people will pay for.
Write down the top 3-5 benefits. If you struggle to list them, you need to build more value before launching.
Set up your membership tiers
Most programmes work well with 2-4 tiers. Fewer is usually better. Each tier should feel like a clear step up from the one below it.
Keep the entry-level tier affordable enough that joining feels low-risk. Put your highest-value benefits (mentoring, exclusive events, premium content) in the upper tiers.
Get your pricing right
Look at what similar organisations charge. Look at what your target members are already paying for comparable value elsewhere. Price based on the value you deliver, not just your costs.
Annual billing is generally better for retention than monthly. Offer a discount for annual payment (10-15% off the monthly rate) to encourage it.
Nail the onboarding
The first 30 days after someone joins are critical. If new members don't engage quickly, they're likely to let their membership lapse at renewal.
Send a welcome email immediately. Follow up within the first week with a "here's how to get the most out of your membership" guide. If possible, assign a point of contact or buddy for new members.
Build in engagement loops
Don't wait for members to come to you. Regular touchpoints keep your membership top of mind: monthly newsletters, quarterly events, an active online forum or group, regular content drops.
The organisations with the best retention rates are the ones where members interact with each other, not just with the organisation.
Track what matters
At minimum, monitor: new member sign-ups, renewal rate, churn rate, event attendance, and member satisfaction (even an annual survey helps). You can't improve what you don't measure.
