Are membership sites profitable?

Short answer: yes, they can be. But "can be" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that sentence.

Membership sites work because of recurring revenue. Instead of making one sale and hoping the customer comes back, you're collecting predictable income every month or year. That's a strong business model. But it only works if people keep renewing, and that's where most membership sites either succeed or fail.

What makes a membership site profitable:

The maths is straightforward. You need your member acquisition cost to be lower than the lifetime value of a member. If it costs you $50 to acquire a member and they stay for an average of 18 months paying $20/month, you're in good shape. If they leave after 2 months, you're losing money.

Margins tend to be healthy because the incremental cost of adding one more member to a digital platform is close to zero. Your biggest costs are content creation, marketing, and the platform itself.

What kills profitability:

High churn is the biggest problem. If you're losing a significant chunk of members every month, you're running on a treadmill: constantly acquiring new members just to replace the ones leaving. The fix is usually better onboarding, more useful content, and genuine community engagement.

The second killer is underpricing. Many organisations are nervous about charging what their membership is worth. If your membership delivers real value (networking, knowledge, credentials, access), price it accordingly.

Realistic revenue benchmarks:

Revenue varies enormously depending on niche and model. A small professional association with 200 members at $500/year generates $100,000 annually. A content membership site with 1,000 members at $29/month generates nearly $350,000 a year. The numbers can work at almost any scale if retention is solid.

The organisations that do well treat membership as a product, not just an income stream. They actively manage the member experience, track retention metrics, and continuously improve their offering.
