How do I attract people to join my membership?
Attracting new members comes down to this: make it clear what they'll get, make it easy to join, and let your existing members do the selling for you.
Here's what actually works:
1. Fix your value proposition first
Before spending on marketing, make sure you can explain the membership's value in one sentence. "We help Singapore HR professionals stay current and build their network through monthly workshops and a private job board." That's specific. That's joinable. "Access to a professional community" is not.
2. Let your members recruit for you
Word of mouth is still the most effective channel for membership organisations. Make it easy: give existing members a referral link or code, and offer a meaningful incentive (a discount on their next renewal, a free event ticket, recognition at your AGM).
Members who join through referrals tend to stay longer than those who find you through ads.
3. Run events open to non-members
Host one or two events per quarter that non-members can attend. This gives potential members a taste of what they'd get and lets them meet existing members. Make sure to capture their contact details and follow up within a week.
4. Make your online presence useful
Publish content that your target audience is already searching for: guides, checklists, industry updates, opinion pieces. This brings people to your site organically. Gate some content behind membership, but give enough away free that people can see the quality.
5. Simplify the sign-up process
Every extra step in your application process costs you members. If you don't genuinely need a committee to approve each application, don't require one. Let people join online, pay immediately, and get access the same day.
6. Offer a trial or introductory rate
A discounted first year, a free trial month, or a "taster" membership gives people a low-risk way to try before committing. Just make sure the experience during the trial is strong enough to convert them.
7. Partner with complementary organisations
Find organisations that serve a similar audience but aren't competitors. Cross-promote each other's memberships, co-host events, or offer reciprocal member discounts.
8. Use social proof
Testimonials from members, logos of corporate members, published membership numbers: these all signal credibility. People are more likely to join something that others already value.
9. Follow up with lapsed members
Former members are often the easiest to win back. They already know what you offer. A personal email or call asking what would bring them back can be surprisingly effective.
Don't try to do all of these at once. Pick two or three, do them well, measure the results, and iterate.
