What are four types of memberships?

Most organisations structure their memberships into four main categories. The exact names vary, but the tiers follow a consistent pattern:

1. Individual membership

This is the standard, full membership for one person. Individual members typically get voting rights, full access to benefits, and can hold leadership positions. Pricing is usually a flat annual or monthly fee.

Examples: a professional joining an industry association, a resident joining a country club, a practitioner joining a regulatory body.

2. Corporate / organisational membership

A company or institution joins as a single entity, and multiple employees get member access under one account. Corporate memberships usually cost more than individual ones but work out cheaper per person. They're common in trade associations, chambers of commerce, and professional bodies.

The key consideration here is how to track individual contacts within a corporate membership. Good membership software will let you manage both the organisation-level relationship and the individual people associated with it.

3. Student / youth membership

A discounted tier for students or young professionals, usually with an age or enrolment requirement. The idea is to bring younger people into the organisation at a price point they can afford, with the expectation that they'll convert to full membership later.

Some organisations offer student memberships for free or at a token rate. It's a pipeline strategy, not a revenue strategy.

4. Honorary / lifetime membership

Granted to individuals who've made significant contributions to the organisation or the field. Honorary members typically don't pay dues. Lifetime memberships are sometimes sold as a one-time lump sum, or awarded for long service.

These tiers aren't just labels. Each one should have clearly defined benefits, pricing, eligibility criteria, and renewal terms. The more clearly you define them upfront, the fewer edge cases you'll have to handle later.
