What are the three types of membership?

When people talk about "three types of membership," they're usually referring to the classic classification used by associations and professional bodies: Regular, Associate, and Affiliate.

Regular (Full) Membership

Regular members are the core of your organisation. They've met all eligibility requirements, pay full dues, and get the complete package: voting rights, access to all benefits, ability to hold office, and full participation in governance.

For a professional association, a regular member might be a fully qualified practitioner. For a country club, it's someone who's been through the application process and pays the standard annual fee.

Associate Membership

Associate members are connected to the organisation but don't meet the full criteria for regular membership. They typically have limited rights: they can attend events and access some benefits, but they usually can't vote or hold leadership positions.

Common examples: professionals in a related field who aren't eligible for full membership, employees of corporate members, or individuals who are working toward full qualification.

Associate membership is useful because it brings more people into your orbit without diluting the meaning of full membership. Many associates eventually transition to regular membership.

Affiliate Membership

Affiliate members have the loosest connection. They might be from a different industry, a different region, or a partner organisation. Affiliate membership is often about networking access and information sharing rather than formal participation.

Benefits are typically limited to newsletters, events, and basic resources. Affiliate members rarely have voting rights.
